A lot is being talked about leadership and the traits a visionary leader should be blessed with.
If a man is called to be a street sweeper he should sweep streets as Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare poetry. He should sweep streets as well that the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say “here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well”.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
As said by Robin Sharma in his latest best seller “The leader who had no title” you need not to be authoritative to be a leader, every human capital can be a leader in his or her own endeavour. Probably the most important thing a leader of the future years would need is to build up trust amongst his followers. Rather than being judgemental about things a future leader should be focused to build relationships or say being empathetic. Trust is all you have and when it is doomed in the darkness of betrayal what an organization looses is more devastating than the revenue or goodwill gained. The momentum of this impact shakes the foundation of any organization.
Ask any group of business people the question “what do effective leaders do?” and you will get a plethora of responses all sugar coated and gloomy. Some might coat it: that leaders set strategy, they build a culture so on and so forth. Then ask them “what should leaders do?” and then you can expect a response: leaders are meant to be giving results. But the question lies underneath as to HOW?
And to answer this in words of “Bill George” Professor at Harvard business School: Leadership is not about the skills but the character of the leader and the person within. “The most important thing a leader must have is authentic voice within an authentic self.” It only comes when you as a leader have a genuine concern for a person, which again is linked to understanding of the human behaviour. It becomes obligatory for a leader to understand emotions and having a sense of purpose and mission of how being a leader you want to lead so that everyone in the organization is congruent with the values and mission of the organization.
Thus to reason out I would say that a leader needs to be empathetic and have a relentless desire to build capacity around them thus they need to be teachers.
Stay well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
